Inventer l’école, penser la co-création [Inventing the school, thinking co-creation] is a publication by Marie Preston on alternative pedagogies developed in France during the 1970s-1990s in "open" schools working on the relationship between co-creation and co-education. This book concerns the educational teams’ successful effort to radically transform the school system in order to contravene social reproduction. These experiences remain incredibly relevant today because they were a real breeding ground in educational, interpersonal and institutional research. The research is particularly pertinent in regard to cooperative artistic practices and co-creation which share similar practices such as social transformation, co-management, the emergence of commons and collective creation.

This book is constructed as a dialogue that juxtaposes the testimonies and interviews of the actors and actresses of the historical mouvement with elements of contextualization and analysis to explore the artistic practices of co-creation. The book contains an interview with Jean Foucambert, a discussion with Rolande and Raymond Millot (Vitruve school in Paris and La Villeneuve in Grenoble) and an unpublished text by André Virengue, director of the Jacques-Prévert school in Villeneuve d'Ascq for 20 years. Iconography is given a crucial part within the book as images are a full part of the research. It also allows the reader to discover the work of the students as well as the school newspapers or other printed material.
